Why a Podcast?

Why a podcast? Why would I start Mirth and Company with something so simple? Because I can’t draw.

One of the best parts about being an entrepreneur (or aspiring) is that you do not need to ask permission. You can pursue any idea that you have and are able to pursue.

There are a number of keywords there – I’ll focus on “able.”

I am able to write stories. I am able to write them down. I am able to record them. I am even able (thanks to technology) to publish those records to a RSS feed that then pushes them for me to your favorite podcast listening tool!

I am not able to draw very well. I would love to! I love art. I have always been obsessed with the way artists can make the page look so alive in so many different ways. I would love to collect more and, for a time, even considered dealing some art (story for another time).

I once read that the reason most people draw at an elementary level is because that is when they stopped learning how to draw or practicing it. That seems pretty spot on for me.

I am trying to learn again with daily practice and doodling but I am by no means ready to illustrate. So I’m currently only able to manage the written and spoken word.

Personally, I love podcasts. I have actually been listening to podcasts since at least 2008 when I commuted into NYC on a daily basis. Back then, options were fairly few but there were some incredible podcasts that taught me so much. Some, like “This Week in Tech” are still proudly chugging along producing some great content!

I still listen to podcasts as often as I can, although without a commute my listen time is down. Still, the idea of making a podcast of my own has rattled around my brain for these 15 years so it made sense as a publishing tool for me.

On the other hand, I know parents who like to have their kids listen to stories or podcasts in the car, before bed, or even just hanging out. I would love for my stories to be a part of a family’s routine and to help children pass the time in the car or, yes, even fall asleep. After all, my stories started as part of our bedtime routine and I would love for them to be a part of yours!

Circling back around, kids love to draw. As they hear my stories, I welcome in and all art drawn of these stories to be shared back with us. With permission, I would love to showcase that art alongside the stories and maybe even use it in videos with the stories.

So all of that above is why I’m launching Mirth and Company, a brand new publishing platform focused on new ideas and new tech, with something so tried and true. A beginning is a single step and a journey is made of every following step.

Telling the stories to my children was the first step. Sharing them with you and yours through this podcast is the next!
